Early Childhood
Description:There are moments across the year where teachers and educators need to have a difficult conversation with colleagues or parents. This session will support teachers and educators in their approach to managing these challenging conversations that occur within an Early Childhood setting. Kristy will share her vast knowledge in this area and share a range of strategies on how to successfully manage these challenging conversations including if these conversations are unplanned or aggression is involved. There will be an opportunity to do role plays in breakout groups, case study analysis and ask Kristy questions.

Description:Supporting children to understand First Peoples' histories, cultures, knowledge and traditions is a critical role for early childhood teachers. In this session, the presenter will share their experiences and strategies on how to incorporate indigenous perspectives in your planning and teaching. When indigenous perspectives are incorporated into your program you are making an important contribution toward Reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Stait Islander people. For teachers in NSW completing Steps to Reconciliation will contribute 2 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area of Aboriginal education and supporting Aboriginal students/children addressing standard descriptor 2.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

Description:Inviting children to learn and engage with ideas through stories is engaging, exciting and fun. Entering into the story as an active participant as a character or to help a character in the story to solve problems, collaborate and explore STEM concepts is highly motivating. Come with me as we explore story based approaches to inform, engage with, and extend STEM concepts in the early childhood space. This work has been inspired by Marilyn Fleer’s research and work on Conceptual Playworlds.

Description:Providing stimulating and exploratory opportunities for young children to engage in is an essential developmental skill. There are many benefits of risky play including problem solving, balance, coordination and building resilience which is why it needs to be planned and encouraged on a regular basis. In this session, Linda will share the benefits of risky play, ways to incorporate risky play regularly into the program and show examples of it in action. This session will also provide the opportunity to gain and share new ideas and resources with other participants and ask Linda questions.

It is important as an educator to understand trauma and how to best give or find supports for children and their family. She will also share ideas, strategies and resources to support the child and their family.

Having a story told to you is a wonderful experience. During TLN's Storytelling Day, you will have an opportunity to listen to two different presenters and their love of story telling. Description:If communities are going to evolve, to better manage risk, then we must foreground children in participatory spaces. Children must be involved in planning, assessment, reflection and reform. Children need to be aware of the strategies in place to keep them safe but also be active participants through the process of risk assessment which requires resources they can truly converse with. To authentically capture feedback and ideas there needs to be a range of user-friendly ways to communicate child safety commitments, policies and procedures in the context of your education and care service.

Description:Learning beyond the gate-Taking learning and engagement our into the community. You don’t have to run a formal weekly nature program to venture outside of your centre regularly. However, you can taking learning out into the community by planning regular excursions or outings where you all can connect with your local area and community. In this session, Heidi Ratje and a colleague will share their experiences on how they take learning beyond the gate. They will share how they plan these outings and excursions, what experiences they have done with their children in the past and how they engage learning in the local community. This could be an ideal session for planning excursions and outings for 2025.

The priority of Playworkers is to provide a place for children to play, where play is defined as “freely chosen, personally directed and intrinsically motivated.” In this session, Linda will introduce the Play Cycle, a fundamental concept of Playwork, and discuss how her discovery of Playwork has fundamentally changed her teaching philosophy and practice.
